Starr Metalcraft Workshops

Starr Metalcraft offers a four part series of workshops that focuses on various components of working with sheet metal for automotive and art application. All Starr Metalcraft workshops are structured to that students of all experience levels will benefit. 

Shaping (3 day): Workshop focusing on using English wheels to create all types of shapes including low, medium, and high crown, reverse curves, and transitions from standard compound and reverse curves. These methods apply to coach-building, as well as restoration and modification of production automobiles. 

Detail (2-3 days): Workshop focusing on creating details including beads used to create floor pans and other body details, such as belt-lines, spears, and wind splits. Other edge finishing techniques will be covered including those applicable to creating joggles, flanges, hems, and wired edges. Welding techniques for details will also be covered in this workshop. 

Panel Instillation (2-3 days): Workshop covering installation of factory replacement panels and cut in patch panels. The focus of this workshop will be maximizing accuracy and minimizing distortion and use of body filler while installing patch panels, full replacement panels (such as door skins and quarters), and body modifications. These techniques are applicable to customization, such as chop tops, Frenching, sectioning, shaving, and de-badging, as well as grill, headlight, and tail light swaps, and so forth.

Metal Finishing (2 day + optional 3rd day): Workshop covering hand skills & practical knowledge in sheet metal shaping, repair and finishing. This workshop will cover hammer and dolly techniques, dressing welds, shrinking disc techniques, torch shrinking methods, bumping dents, repair of various forms damage, and techniques for metal finishing patch panels to minimize use of filler. An optional third day extension is available that will cover planishing hammer application and technique. Extension participants will have the opportunity to learn on a variety of vintage planishing hammers, handheld and pedestal mounted, as well as die selection technique and access to invaluable information regarding building your own affordable planishing hammer.
